Formatting & Indentation

Lumide manages code formatting via language servers and internal auto-indentation rules.

Indentation Settings#

Configured under Settings -> Editor:

  • Tab Size (editor.tab_size): Number of spaces per tab level (default: 2).
  • Insert Spaces (editor.insert_spaces): Inserts spaces when pressing Tab (default: true).
  • Indent Guides (editor.show_indent_guides): Displays vertical indentation guides in the editor.

Auto-Pairs & Smart Brackets#

Lumide manages closing brackets and quotes automatically:

  • Pair Insertion: Typing (, [, {, ', ", or ` automatically inserts the closing character.
  • Overtyping: Typing the closing character when sitting directly before it advances the cursor forward instead of duplicating it.
  • Paired Deletion: Pressing Backspace inside an empty pair (|) removes both characters.
  • Surround Selection: Highlighting text and typing an opening bracket or quote wraps the selection inside that pair.

Formatting Code#

Reformat Document#

  • macOS: Cmd + Option + L (VS Code preset: Option + Shift + F)
  • Windows / Linux: Ctrl + Alt + L (VS Code preset: Alt + Shift + F)

Delegates formatting directly to the active language server (e.g., dart format, prettier, rustfmt, gofmt).

Format on Save#

To format automatically every time a file is saved:

  • Enable Settings -> Editor -> Format On Save (editor.format_on_save: true).

If the formatter takes longer than 5 seconds, Lumide saves the file as it is and tells you it skipped formatting, so a stuck formatter never holds up a save.
